Discovery Sprints
Sa’ ili le ala can be understood as a tale of a courageous young traveller confronting and overcoming various challenges and uncertainties. The journey symbolises the path of life, in which individuals encounter obstacles, opportunities and choices that shape their future
This story encourages individuals to be proactive, resilient and persistent in seeking their goals and dreams. Young people should not be afraid to explore new paths, tackle problems, or venture out of their comfort zone.
The spirit of adventure underpins the Discovery Sprints journey. Over three Sprints, young people engaged in creative activities that introduced them to new people, new environments and different ways of thinking and doing. The students were introduced to a variety of disciplines and student clubs, and university life.
Sprint One
Communication design fundamentals and mark making.
Sprint Three
Motion design, animation and illustration.
Sprint Two
Motion design, animation and illustration.
Sprint One
Sprint One focused on two-dimensional design and the fundamentals of visual communication. Sprint participants abandoned digital tools and worked with pencils, paint, markers, collage and found objects.
Through examining composition and form, the students gained insight into the strategy and design considerations that professional communication designers work with daily. Both individually and in teams, the youth conceptualised individual designs for NRL training jerseys. Then, they combined the designs into eight team jerseys that underwent further refinement in Sprint Two.

Sprint Two
Sprint Two focused on the motion image. It introduced students to early forms of animation, such as flipbooks, animatics, frame-by-frame animation and the phenakistascope (which creates the illusion of moving images using a small number of drawings).
The students revisited two-dimensional design in working in teams to design graphics for footballs. This required the students to think about the four sides of the football and the way different narratives come together. In addition, they refined the jersey designs from Sprint one for production.
In Sprint Two, the students collaborated with our Swinburne student sprinters to refine the eight jerseys developed from Sprint one. Together they selected the jerseys for print and generated seven NRL training jersey ready for printing and five rugby footballs for production

Sprint Three
Sprint Three focused on the hope and dreams of students. While Sprints One and Two encouraged students to explore and experiment visually in two dimensions and motion, this sprint challenged students to bring the elements together three-dimensionally. They achieved this through the exterior design of a Melbourne tram and an exhibition where the students graduated from the Discovery Sprints. Students included their design process in the exhibition, as well as participating in the filming of each other as they recorded their reflections of their journey through the Discovery Sprints and talking of their aspirations for the future. These videos were part of the exhibition on the final day of Sprint Three
